Your Memoir Journey Begins with Goals

Embarking on the journey of writing a memoir is a thrilling and transformative experience. I remember with great clarity the exact moment I decided to think about writing Accidental First Lady.

You may already know that this life-changing idea transpired over coffee with a friend. Ironically, the decision that my husband and I made together to jump headfirst into politics in 1999 with no experience happened over a bottle of wine. Something about imbibing a delicious beverage inspiring new project, but no matter the journey to committing to do something new, it’s exciting yet simultaneously confusing.

When I decided to start drafting my book, I recalled some of the same feelings Rick and I had when he decided to run for office for the first of what turned out to be eight political campaigns over 22 years. Emotions that came to mind were passion, determination, and vulnerability. Over the course of political life, then when authoring my book in the sunset of my husband’s political career, I repeatedly had to conjure creativity in how I navigated the political, then publishing world.

Aspiring authors have a burning desire to share their unique stories with the world. I had to learn how to balance the eagerness to write and finish my book with doing so in a measured, organized way. Whether you’re an outline person, or voracious list maker, or a combination of the two, it’s imperative to set goals. In the sea of literary dreams, goal setting shines brightly as the guiding light toward turning those author aspirations into a tangible reality.

The author’s journey is a voyage. Setting realistic and achievable goals is not just a formality; it's the rudder that steers your writing ship through the vast expanse of your memoir. Here’s how goal setting can enhance your author journey, and why it’s important:

Clarity in the Narrative: Writing a memoir is about more than just putting words on paper. Setting clear and specific goals helps bring focus to your narrative. Whether it's defining the central theme, identifying your target audience, or outlining key events, each goal contributes to the overall clarity of your story.

A Blueprint for Success: Goals provide a blueprint for success, breaking down the monumental task of writing a memoir into manageable steps. This not only makes the journey less daunting but also allows you to celebrate small victories along the way, reinforcing your commitment to the larger vision.

Overcoming the Blank Page Syndrome: The blank page can be an intimidating adversary for any writer. Goals function as a compass, guiding you through the vast expanse of your narrative. With a clear roadmap, you'll find it easier to navigate the twists and turns of your story, overcoming writer's block and maintaining a consistent writing flow.

Motivation in Every Word: Setting achievable goals provides a continuous source of motivation. As you reach each milestone, you'll find renewed energy and purpose to carry you through the next phase of your memoir. This intrinsic motivation becomes the driving force behind the creation of a compelling and authentic narrative.

Adapting to the Winds of Change: The writing process is dynamic, and goals function as your anchor in the storm. Anticipating challenges, as outlined in your goals, allows you to adapt to unexpected twists and turns. Flexibility becomes an asset in overcoming obstacles and maintaining momentum.
