What's Your Memoir Writing Roadblock?

For many of us, the desire to write a memoir doesn’t appear out of nowhere. It often starts as a whisper—a small voice telling you that your story matters, that your life experiences are worth sharing. But between that initial spark and actually sitting down to write, something happens. You hit a roadblock.

Maybe it’s time. Maybe it’s confidence. Maybe it’s simply not knowing how to organize all your memories into a cohesive story. If you’re feeling stuck, know this—you’re not alone.

My Own Journey: Battling Imposter Syndrome

When I first began my memoir-writing journey, I was filled with self-doubt. Who was I to think my story was worth telling? Imposter syndrome crept in at every turn, whispering things like, “You’re not an author,” or “No one’s going to care about your experiences.”

It was hard, and there were many moments where I felt like giving up. But I kept going. Writing a memoir is an emotional journey. As I worked through my doubts, I started learning more about myself. I realized that writing wasn’t just about me—it was about offering something to others.

So, I persisted. Little by little, I carved out time to write, and eventually, I finished my memoir. When I finally published it, I knew I had pushed through one of the most challenging things I’d ever done—and it was worth it. But I wouldn’t have gotten there without facing the roadblocks that had kept me from moving forward for so long.

What’s Holding You Back?

If you’re here reading this, chances are you’ve thought about writing your memoir, too. Maybe you've already started, or maybe the idea of writing feels overwhelming because you're not sure where to begin. One thing I’ve learned is that everyone, no matter how determined or talented, faces roadblocks when they set out to write their memoir.

But here’s the good news—whatever is stopping you can be overcome.

Whether it’s:

  • Imposter syndrome: You question the value of your story.

  • Lack of time: Life is busy, and writing gets pushed aside.

  • Story structure: You’re unsure how to organize your thoughts or memories into a compelling narrative.

These are normal hurdles. Everyone faces them. But before you can move forward, you need to identify your specific roadblock. Once you know what’s holding you back, you can develop a strategy to push through it and make progress toward completing your memoir.
