How to Turn Your Memoir Dreams into Reality
The idea to write my memoir was born over coffee with a friend. The suggestion that I should tell my behind-the-scenes stories of 22 years of being a political spouse lit a fire inside that thankfully didn’t burn. Since publishing in 2021, I’m still amazed that it never occurred to me to write about my experience as a self-described accidental first lady (which happens to be the title of my book).
I remember texting my husband at a red light with the idea that was merely a suggestion less than an hour ago. He immediately responded with, “Yes! That’s a great idea!” I’m not the only writer in the world who has sought validation, so I willingly share here that I bounced this idea off of our friend, John, whose political consulting firm produced commercials that undoubtedly contributed to his last 5 political victories.
Engaging in political campaigns is an intimate experience. I’ll bet you didn’t expect to hear that. What I mean is that for as little time as six months, you live, breathe, and consume anything and everything that moves the needle one step closer to election day and hopeful victory. After attending to ourselves and our families, the campaign takes precedence. Looking back, it’s hard to believe I lived that life for 22 years.
Members of “the team,” as we called our campaign manager, messaging experts, pollsters, and finance directors, felt like family. So when I shared my idea of writing a book with one of these family members, he also endorsed the idea.
Many of us harbor dreams of penning our life stories, weaving memories into captivating narratives that resonate with readers. Yet, for many aspiring memoirists, the journey from idea to execution can seem like an insurmountable mountain to climb. The thought of distilling decades of experiences into a coherent manuscript felt overwhelming at times.
However, I focused on approaching this goal of writing a book as a marathon, not a sprint. Mindset can be guiding determinant that turns your memoir dreams into reality. Practical steps for navigating the memoir-writing process include setting aside dedicated writing time, establishing a supportive routine and breaking down the task into manageable chunks.
Set aside dedicated writing time
One of the biggest hurdles for aspiring memoirists is finding the time to write amid our busy lives. However, carving out dedicated writing time is crucial for making progress on your memoir. Consider your schedule and identify pockets of time where you can devote yourself to writing. Whether it's early mornings before the world wakes up, lunch breaks, or evenings after work, prioritize your writing by scheduling it into your calendar. Treat your writing time as sacred and non-negotiable, just like any other important commitment in your life.
Establish a supportive writing routine
Consistency is key when it comes to writing a memoir. Establishing a supportive writing routine can help you stay on track and maintain momentum throughout the writing process. Find a writing environment that inspires you, whether it's a cozy corner in your home, a local café, or a quiet library. Surround yourself with tools and resources that facilitate your writing, such as notebooks, pens, or a laptop with writing software. Experiment with different writing rituals, such as lighting a candle, playing soft music, or practicing mindfulness exercises to get into the writing zone.
Break down the daunting task
Writing a memoir can feel like an overwhelming task, especially when faced with the enormity of documenting a lifetime of experiences. However, breaking down the process into manageable chunks can make it more achievable. Start by outlining your memoir, jotting down key events, themes, and anecdotes you want to include. Break your memoir into chapters or sections, focusing on one segment at a time rather than trying to tackle the entire manuscript at once. Set realistic goals for yourself, whether it's writing a certain number of words or completing a chapter within a specified timeframe. Celebrate small victories along the way to keep yourself motivated and inspired.
Seek support and accountability
Writing can be a solitary endeavor, but that doesn't mean you have to go it alone. Seek support and accountability from fellow writers, friends, or family members who can cheer you on and provide encouragement when the going gets tough. Consider joining a writing group or workshop where you can share your work, receive feedback, and connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for memoir writing. Accountability partners can help keep you accountable to your writing goals, offering support and encouragement along the way.
From dream to reality
Turning your memoir dreams into reality requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace the writing process. By setting aside dedicated writing time, establishing a supportive routine, breaking down the daunting task into manageable chunks, and seeking support and accountability, you can overcome the challenges and obstacles that stand in your way. Remember that every journey begins with a single step, and each word you write brings you one step closer to realizing your memoir dreams. So, find your favorite spot to write, unleash your creativity, and embark on the transformative journey of memoir writing. Your story deserves to be told, and the world is waiting to hear it.
